May Birthstone

May 7, 2013 Posted by admin

For those of you who have a loved one who will be celebrating their birthday in the month of May, you may want to help them celebrate their birth with a beautiful piece of jewelry. The emerald is the official birthstone for all of those May babies and is derived from the Greek word smaragdus which translated means green in English. The emerald has long been known as the symbol of rebirth and is believed to grant the owner foresight, good fortune and youth. Early emeralds were mined in Egypt as early as 330 B.C. and today are mined in Colombia, Brazil, Afghanistan and Zambia.

The emerald is one of the most popular gem stones due to its unparalleled intensity in the gem world. The vibrant green color is caused by small amounts of chromium and then enhanced by traces of iron. The emerald also stands out in the gem world for another reason. The emerald usually contains inclusions and other flaws, but unlike other stones these flaws are not looked upon as negative aspects for the gem. The emerald is unique in the fact that these flaws are considered a vital part of the character of the stone and are a tell tale sign that the buyer is purchasing a natural stone.

That is not to say that just because the stone has flaws mean that the stone has undergone no treatment at all. Nearly all emeralds have been treated in order to improve clarity by immersing the stone in oil. In some processes the oil that is used to treat the stone is tinted green in order to intensify the green color. Over the years however the property that is influenced by the oil can begin to fade and reveal flaws that were masked at purchase time. However, if you have the stone treated with the oil again, the flaws will disappear once again.

The 1970’s

The 1980’s

The 1980’s saw the emergence of the punk rock movement and the reintroduction of bold colors in jewelry. During the 1980’s the motto was the bigger the better and everyone was vying for that next big piece to complete their collection.

The 1990’s

White gold dominated the 1990’s and the beginning of the body piercing movement can be traced to the 1990’s as people began to truly embrace jewelry as a form of self-expression.

Red Carpet Rundown

March 15, 2013 Posted by admin

After tonight, there was another awards show and another red carpet in the books. The music elite gathered together to celebrate one another and pay tribute to those that they lost during the year. Before the ceremony though, all eyes were on the stars as they arrived in the best that fashion had to offer.

Katy Perry

Katie Perry Grammy’s 2013

Katy Perry made her presence known in a mint green gown that pushed the envelope in terms of the guidelines provided by the Grammy Awards powers that be. The embellished neckline made the need for a necklace nonexistent, so instead she opted for several gemstone statement rings.

 Giuliana Rancic

Giuliana Rancic arrived for her E Red Carpet special in a tone downed camel colored gown. She did however provide interest to her ensemble by joining the likes of Rihanna in paying tribute to the Year of the Snake with her accessories. What Giuliana’s dress may have lacked in terms of interest her serpent rings more than made up for in terms of style.

 Kelly Osbourne

Kelly kept it simple this year and let the dress speak for itself. Her black floor length gown skirted the Grammy guidelines with the cutouts around the waistline. Kelly was one of the few celebrities that opted for gold accents this year. She chose 18k gold earrings, bracelets and rings to finish her look.

Beyonce

Beyonce Grammy’s 2013

Beyonce chose to rock two of the biggest fashion statements of the season at the Grammy Awards this year. She hit the red carpet in a black and white (trend 1) pants suit (trend 2). She accented that fashion statement with two large, matching cuffs on her wrists and simple earrings in her ears.

 Adele

Adele was all about the floral at the Grammy Awards. Her black and red floral pattern was a force to be reckoned with and included her shoes of the evening. Her jewelry options followed suit and were a floral pattern that also matched the dress.

So after the rundown, there is only one question that remains. Who got it right and who will spend all their days until the next event trying to right their fashion wrong?

The Key to Stackable Jewelry

March 8, 2013 Posted by admin

Debra Messing Golden Globes

Choosing the perfect jewelry combination is about having an outlet for self-expression. Your choices are a reflection of your style and personality persona, and that is never truer than when you create a great stackable bracelet combination. Debra Messing rocked a great example of this hot trend at the Golden Globes when she sported a great stackable combination complete with mixed metals and all. The key to a great stacked combination is to find a sense of balance and cohesion.

Creating a Sense of Balance

The first important characteristic of a great stackable combination is to strike a balance with the piece. Look for a combination of small and large pieces that will coordinate with one another. Choose two large pieces that will serve as the anchor for your stackable combination. These pieces will be the beginning and the end of the bracelet and need to make a large statement.

Creating a Sense of Cohesion

The next characteristic of a great stackable combination is that the piece needs to have a sense of cohesion and appear as if all the separate parts were meant to be worn together. It is not enough to place separate pieces together, they must also look as if they are meant to be going to the same event. If you are creating a stackable statement with gem stones, then look for pieces that have a similar color scheme. They will automatically look as if they belong together. If you are choosing to mix metals, then choose pieces that have a similar size and scale in order to create a sense of cohesion.

Create your own Golden Globe worthy moment by designing a stackable jewelry piece that will be a reflection of your style persona and personality. Find your own sense of balance and cohesion along the way as a part of your overall process. Then, strut your stuff with confidence, knowing that you were the master of your own design destiny.

Your Guide on How to Mix Diamonds and Pearls with Ease

March 1, 2013 Posted by admin

Diamonds are a girl’s best friend and pearls have always been a symbol of classic style. Now one of the newest trends to grace the red carpet is the mixture of the timeless jewel of the diamond and the classic pearl look.

Jennifer Hudson pulled the look off with flawless ease during her touching tribute to Whitney Houston at the 2012 Grammy ceremony. The diamond and pearl statement ring was the perfect accent to her black and silver Alexander McQueen gown. So, that begs the question how did she manage to make such an effective style statement on the red carpet and at the ceremony? One of the tricks of the trade that made her piece such a style win was that the piece was made like that. What do you do though if you want to rock the trend and are unable to find a ready made piece? How do you pair the two styles together to create a look that seems to be made for one another?

First, look for style cues that indicate that the two pieces were meant to be worn to the same event. You do not want to make the mistake of putting together a piece that was meant to be worn to a formal occasion with one that was designed for the casual setting. Then, look at the clasps and accents. Pay special attention to the colors and details of the two pieces. If they look like they could be worn to the same event and they share the same color for their clasps and accents then you may have found the perfect marriage.

The final test is whether the two pieces are proportionally the same size. Do not pair a large statement cuff with a small single pearl. The two need to look like they were cut from the same mold. Mixing jewels and metals is all about finding pieces that may not necessarily have been made for each other, but with careful placement hide that fact. As long as you style it with flair, you can always find a way to rock a good trend.
